Warrington Borough Council climate bonds

Backing Warrington in the race to become the UK’s first carbon neutral town

Warrington Borough Council raised £1 million to help fund the next steps on its innovative green energy strategy. The funding was put towards the development of a 20MW ground mounted solar system with the addition of 40MW of battery storage located in Cirencester, Gloucestershire.

The council has already made significant investments in green energy development, halving its carbon emissions since 2009. This investment forms part of Warrington’s portfolio of energy investments — both in its area and around the UK. The aim of its investment strategy is to both generate green energy to tackle the climate crisis, and generate an income for the council to fund core services.

The investment generated local and national PR interest for the council. They also offered investors the option to donate their interest to fund the rollout of solar power & energy efficiency measures at the local disability action network. In all, 11% of investors chose to donate some or all of their first investment payment towards this cause.
